The History
Following Hurricane Katrina
Disability advocates, organizations, federal, state and local governmental entities have been collaborating through the Louisiana Emergency Management Disability and Aging Coalition (EMDAC) for the past almost 20 years following Hurricane Katrina.
While the efforts, collaboration, and coordination of EMDAC have had tremendous impacts in the ability to support people with disabilities following disasters, there were gaps in the ability to sustain efforts and build on lessons learned.
Louisiana Legislature
The Louisiana Legislature recognized the need for sustained efforts and enacted a law that created the Disability Assessment and Coordination Entity (DACE) through the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP).
The foundation of Disability Access Solutions was driven by CEO Bambi Polotzola's vision and leadership as she began assembling a dedicated team. Our commitment to creating effective, accessible solutions remains at the core of every step we take to ensure the success of the disability community and those who serve them.
